The Internet Freedom Foundation has won the first Global Privacy and Human Rights Award of the Global Privacy Assembly Working Group on Data Protection and Other Rights and Freedoms.
The prize was awarded in Taipei, Taiwan, during the annual RightsCon conference
Internet Freedom Foundation was honoured for its litigation and advocacy work defending online freedom and addressing the use of excessive and illegal surveillance. In particular, it was recognized for its advocacy work related to the surveillance of sanitation workers and the introduction of a student ID system.
Apar Gupta, Founder Director of the IFF, said in his acceptance speech that he was accepting the award on behalf of every Indian who believes in the fundamental power of privacy.
"We at IFF view the GPA award not as an accolade for our past work but encouragement for the fights that need to be fought for the right to privacy. A fight that is led by, fought alongside the gig workers, the manual labourers and farmers in India who are subject to digital systems that violate their constitutional rights," Gupta said. He raised concerns about the recently enacted Digital Personal Data Protection Act, saying that it "centralizes executive authority and expands the surveillance net."
