Patna High Court Launches 'SUVAS Cell' Web Portal To Translate Judgments From English Into Regional Languages
The SUVAS Cell (Supreme Court Vidhik Anuvaad Software Cell) of the Patna High Court launched its independent web portal on 4 July 2025, hosted on the official website of the Court.
The launch was carried out by Justice Prabhat Kumar Singh, Chairman of the SUVAS Committee, in the presence of Justice A. Abhishek Reddy and Justice Chandra Shekhar Jha, both members of the Committee. Justice Jitendra Kumar is also a member of the SUVAS Committee, which is entrusted with monitoring all machine translation activities and e-law report functions of the Court.
As per a press release by the High Court, "This is significant progress in the implementation of SUVAS an Al-based translation tool developed to translate Supreme Court judgments and legal documents from English into vernacular Indian languages. This initiative, launched by the Hon'ble Supreme Court of India, aims to bridge language barriers in legal discourse and make judicial information more accessible to the general public."
"It currently supports multiple Indian languages and is designed specifically for the complex vocabulary and structure of legal texts. SUVAS aligns with the goals of transparency, accessibility, and linguistic inclusivity in the Indian judicial system, supporting the broader vision of justice for all. The SUVAS Cell at Patna High Court is now operational in a separate building SUVAS Cell, fully furnished facility with seating for approximately 100 personnel, including an Editor, and a Sub-Editor translators, translators-cum-proofreaders," the press release added.
Notably, the Patna High Court Recruitment Cell has recruited 52 translators and 16 translators-cum-proofreaders, with the results published on 27.06.25, ahead of the deadline of 30.06.25 set by the Supreme Court, marking a major milestone in the project's rollout.
The Cell has digitized and uploaded physically published volumes of the ILR-Patna series, from the available physical volumes published between the year 1922 to 2001. The SUVAS Cell is also tasked with uploading bilingual English-Hindi judgments along with headnotes on the digital e-ILR / e-PHCR platforms, the links to which are available on the new SUVAS Cell portal and also directly from the website of the Patna High Court.
Further, more than 2,000 Hindi-translated judgments are available on the digital e-ILR / e-PHCR platforms, and with the joining of the team of translators and proofreaders, the number of available Hindi judgments is expected to rise substantially.
In addition, the SUVAS Cell will be translating and uploading judgments in Hindi of the Patna High Court on the National Judicial Data Grid (NJDG), and also the Supreme Court judgments arising from the Patna High Court on the eSCR portal, further promoting transparency and ease of access to legal resources.
"This initiative is a step forward in achieving the vision of a more inclusive, transparent, and digitally empowered Indian judicial system, accessible to all," the press release stated.
