Chief Justice of India (CJI) Bhushan Gavai on Sunday inaugurated the new and the fifth bench of Bombay High Court at Kolhapur in Western Maharashtra.

Notably, Bombay High Court at present has a bench in Mumbai - its principal seat, and two separate benches at Nagpur and Aurangabad. Another bench of the High Court is at Goa. Now Kolhapur is the fifth bench.

It would also not be out of place to mention that there have been demands for a seat at Kolhapur from last 20 plus years for easing the burden of litigants and lawyers, who had to travel all the to Mumbai, the principal seat, which presently has jurisdiction.

The Kolhapur bench will have jurisdiction over six districts - Satara, Sangli, Solapur, Kolhapur, Ratnagiri and Sindhudurg

A notification appointing Kolhapur at the circuit bench, was issued by Bombay High Court's Chief Justice Alok Aradhe on August 1.

Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis and Dy CM Eknath Shinde were also present at the event.

Justice Shivkumar Dige, who was posted at Principal seat in Mumbai and now transferred to preside as a single-judge at Kolhapur, sits in his courtroom, in the presence of all the dignitaries.
